@the.living.room.pod: A stem cell isn't just one thing. And most people's understanding of them stops at a controversy from two decades ago. In this conversation, Dr. Darcie Moore breaks down what a stem cell actually is — and why the concept is more nuanced than most people realize. At its core, a stem cell has two defining qualities: it can renew itself, and it can become something else. But from there, the picture gets more complex. Not all stem cells are created equal. Some can make any cell in the body. Others are more limited. And the ones with the broadest range — what scientists call pluripotent stem cells — have the capacity to produce virtually every cell type the body contains. As Dr. Moore explains, we don't yet have stem cells capable of building an entire organism. But what we do have is remarkable enough. Understanding what these cells actually are is the starting point for understanding what they might one day do.
