yesterday morning, brian and i’s worst nightmare came true. our sweet, sweet boy has crossed over the rainbow bridge. i don’t even know how to express what i’m feeling into words. i think i’m still in shock. although we knew he was getting older and slower, this came out of nowhere. he was fine one day and couldn’t even stand up the next. he then declined so quickly overnight that we couldn’t handle the agony of watching him suffer. we called a professional and she came and gave us her honest opinion and we made the hardest decision of our lives. he enjoyed lots of bacon and love and was put to the snoriest sleep on the couch, in our home, on his favorite pillow. how to explain our sweet alpha? there are childhood dogs, dogs that you didn’t know for very long but bond deeply with, and then there are soul dogs. but what do you call it when you’re given the privilege of getting to share someone else’s soul dog, and then you both lose that dog together? when brian and i first started talking, i immediately was told all about alpha. it was abundantly clear that alpha was one of the most important things in the world to brian. i got daily pictures of him, and the two of them were always together. they were the very best of friends and that dog was and is brian’s absolute everything. brian has suffered significant loss in the past 3 years, and alpha helped him through all of it. he literally saved him. when it was finally time for them to move to florida with me, the three of us set off on a long road trip to start our life together. alpha got to explore so many states and new places and he loved every second of that adventure. he just wanted to be included always. we eventually made it and got all moved in to our new place, and became a little family. i already loved alpha, but this was when i really fell IN love with him. it was such an honor to be apart of his life. i might not have started with him, but i got to love him until his literal last breath. i am forever grateful for that. brian, thank you for sharing your soul dog and best friend with me. i’m so, so, so sorry that you lost your other half. you gave him such a great life. i love you both so much. alpha, you are forever loved. we have felt every second of your absence so far and can’t believe this is still just the beginning of life without you. i know dad and grandma were waiting for you with open arms, but our world here is so much darker without you. i’ll miss singing to you, bugging you, the way your head fit against ours perfectly, nightly pond walks, your goofy goofy personality, and all of the loyalty and love. until we meet again, my sweet baby al❤️‍🩹 #dogloss #petloss #petgrief #germanshepherd @Josie Balka
