Answer: IB (Infectious Bronchitis) It's a virus, so there is NO cure, only prevention + support like flu in humans. HOW TO KNOW IT'S IB - NOT NEWCASTLE OR FLU: - Coughing, sneezing, gasping - birds stretch neck to breathe - Watery eyes, swollen face - Eggs: Sudden drop 20-50%, soft shells, wrinkled shells like "korrugated iron", watery egg white - no thick white - Kidneys: White diarrhea, birds drink too much water, death in chicks with swollen kidneys (when you open, kidney swollen pale) - Spreads VERY fast - all house coughs in 2-3 days, but deaths low except chicks If twisted neck + green diarrhea = Newcastle. If cough + bad eggs + kidney water = IB. TREATMENT - WHAT TO DO WHEN THEY ARE SICK: Because virus, antibiotics don't kill it. But you MUST stop secondary bacteria: 1. Supportive - Most important: - Warm house, no draft, but ventilate - ammonia makes IB worse - Give electrolytes + vitamins (Stress pack, Vit E, Aminovit) in water for 5 days - helps birds breathe, K20 at agro vet - Add garlic + ginger juice in water - opens airways - Reduce protein slightly, give maize more - helps kidneys 2. Antibiotic for secondary infection (Get from agro vet): - Oxytetracycline 20% or Tylosin or Doxycycline - 1g per liter water for 4-5 day. - Do NOT give too much - IB attacks kidneys, many drugs damage kidneys more 3. Eggs: Don't eat soft eggs, don't hatch them - chicks will be weak 4. Rest: Birds will cough for 2-3 weeks, egg production comes back after 4-6 weeks but never 100% if damage is big. Layers hit early (0-5 weeks) may become fake layers - never lay well. PREVENTION - ONLY WAY: This is where you win boss. IB virus mutates fast. 1. VACCINE - MUST: - Day 1-7: IB Ma5 or H120 (spray or eye drop) at hatchery or day old - Day 14: IB + Newcastle clone (Ma5+Clone) - many agro vets sell as "IB+ND" - *Layers/Breeders: At 12-16 weeks give IB 4/91 or variant booster - protects egg shells 2. Biosecurity - IB spreads by AIR 1km: - Don't visit other poultry houses, then yours same day - Change shoes, wash hands - 2 weeks empty house between flocks - disinfect with Virukill - Don't mix ages - old birds give to chicks
