@chloethorpaws: Japanese scientists have developed plastic that dissolves in seawater within hours without leaving persistent microplastics behind. Led by Takuzo Aida, researchers at RIKEN and the University of Tokyo created a strong, recyclable material whose molecular bonds come apart when exposed to saltwater. The research, published in Science in November 2024, also found that sheets degraded in soil in about 10 days, releasing nitrogen and phosphorus that could provide nutrients. These findings apply to the specially developed material, not ordinary plastic bottles. Further development is needed for widespread use. Responsible recycling remains important because excess nutrients can harm marine ecosystems. The material offers a promising step toward reducing plastic pollution. A cleaner ocean would be a gift to every generation that follows. #PlasticPollution #OceanConservation #ScientificInnovation #Sustainability #EnvironmentalScience
