Tupac Shakur's sister told a judge today that their mother conceived him while out of jail on bail, and she was acquitted at trial one month and three days before he was born.
Tupac Shakur's sister told a judge today that their mother conceived him while out of jail on bail, and she was acquitted at trial one month and three days before he was born. "My brother was born an icon. He was born a legend. My mother fought for his life while she was herself on trial, facing 365 years in prison," said Sekyiwa 'Set' Shakur. Afeni Shakur, who died in 2016, was accused with 20 other members of the Harlem chapter of the Black Panther Party oif conspiring to bomb department stores, police stations and transit systems. She represented herself at trial while pregnant with Tupac, and a jury declared her not guilty on all counts on May 13, 1971. Sekyiwa was born in 1975 to Afeni and Mutulu Shakur and is Tupac's half sister. She spoke about their mother's plans for Tupac during Duane "Keffe D" Davis' sentencing before Judge Carli Kierny in Nevada's 8th Judicial District in Las Vegas. A jury convicted Davis of first-degree murder on Aug. 31 for his role in Tupac's 1996 shooting on the Strip. Kierny sentenced him today to 40 years to life in prison. Their mother "first named him Parish Lesane Crooks because she was afraid that the government, the state or enemies would try to take him from her while he was in the hospital," Sekyiwa said. "I say, begin with that, because my mother's not here to see this day, and she fought for his life since before he was born. She consciously raised him to be a human rights activist, someone to stand up for those weaker and smaller than he was, and that's who he was to me and all the family. He was the person that you go to for protection, even as a nine-year-old," she continued. As the oldest, "his responsibility was to watch over the younger kids." "He never stopped. He's not only my brother, four years my senior, but he's also my father figure. He was the man in my home. He was charged with being the man in the home. He was charged with being the person to be responsible and take care of me, to keep me out of trouble, to pull me off the off the street corners with my friends when I was past my curfew," Sekyiwa said. "He was his responsibility to make sure I ate, and it wasn't just me again. Everybody in our our immediate family, our extended family, and as we got older, our community as a whole." Sekyiwa spoke for 20 minutes. You can watch all of it on my Facebook page and YouTube channel. #law #crime #court
