A contestant, Erika Ellis, told Nick, 52, that she has had a “tough time” knowing when to talk about her past marriage on dates. That led him to share his own history. “As some of you may know, I was previously married before I met my incredible wife,” Nick said. He called it a “very unique argument” that a past marriage “gives you a leg up.” His reason: “You know from that experience what it is you truly want.” His wife, Vanessa, 45, added, “We all have messy pasts, all of us.” Nick married Jessica Simpson in 2002, after four years of dating. They starred in the MTV reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. They split in 2005, and the divorce was finalized in 2006. Nick began dating Vanessa in 2006, and they married in 2011.
