Herd mentality exists everywhere across the world. Why makes you think Koreans are special? White people, black people, arab people, etc all have herd mentality. You just don’t know it.

i take solace in the fact that despite Koreans regularly talking shit about other Koreans, they still go out of their way to be in the same spaces

I get this tho I don’t think it’s internalized racism it’s noticing something in your own culture that you don’t agree with

My husband is Korean and I’m not and he said it’s because they’re judgmental. He also feels like he has to protect me when we go to Korea because I’m not skinny enough for Korea and I have some tattoos that he knows people will judge me for.

I live in Korea for the past 5 years and trust me my bf (Korean) the reason why he doesn’t have many Korean friends for that reason he tells me too much judgement and silent competition that’s why he loves hanging with my international friends bc he feels so free and it’s a carefree space, I personally felt and seen it when I had Korean friends

could also be a classism/congregation mindset - your experiences stem from international school and church which are highly classist 🥲 I def agree with you and that’s why I don’t go to church lol but from my experience working in Korea there are lots of kind people, just not in those very extreme spaces

As a Korean, I concur. The sad thing is NON Koreans are SO blinded by the pretty smart cool Koreans. I’m talking about TEACHERS, administrators, Non Korean Parents etc. these korean girls are the biggest 2 faced judgmental people on earth. They usually are excellent at acting. They are the BEST at manipulating people and making people do what they want while making people think they are sweet angels. They target people who are nice, smart and likable. Because they are so competitive, they don’t target the weird, not smart, mean kids. They don’t care about people like that. Non Koreans don’t know this. Super Popular Korean girls are never good news. Super popular Korean moms or any korean mom trying too hard are never good news.

I get it. Korean Koreans live the old ways of life, taught by narrow mindedness. And the reason why American Koreans don’t like other American Koreans depends on where they were raised and by whom. Were they raised by first gen Korean parents or second gen. Were they adopted by white parents. Also, were they raised in west cost, mid west, or east cost.

I’m half Korean and I do not go to Korean American churches. It’s so sad but some of the worst people are there. It makes me sad because I know my dad took me so I had some connection to my Korean side and so I could practice my Korean too. My boyfriend used to go to Korean churches only but since we got together he has moved away from that and he’s become a better person and better follower of God. I love being Korean but there are also a lot of social issues like classism for sure.

no youre right. my husband is the same way. and honestly its sad but some of the foreigners that do content here in korea have subconsciously adopted this behavior. its a big reason why my husband and I are VERY selective of who we choose to hang out with.

i constantly battle with this because a lot of the problematic things that korean people perpetuate are because we have a tumultuous and complicated history; including but not limited to being under japanese imperial rule, american military occupation, and ofc the korean war. pretty much everything i disagree with within our society is a byproduct of that, and i understand that. but at the same time i struggle to find camaraderie with korean people who continue to push this culture of bullying and hyper-judgment because we should be stronger to grow past that, but unfortunately most people just follow the crowd.

Its veil of tolerance and acceptance falling. Especially in Korean-diaspora churches as soon as they have access to an homogenous space their mask falls off. Seen it multiple times.

I think this is a common diaspora issue I’ve heard people from several different ethnicities do this like most Persians you meet in LA will straight up tell you they hate other Persians but will still be friendly with them for connections. I think it stems from people in diasporas trying to police one another on how they think their ethnicity should behave and be perceived a lot of it is based on what was going on socially when their parents left their home country. You will see a flip side of this argument that diasporas will have a hard time connecting with people in the motherland because society back home continues to evolve and move on where in diaspora communities it has a tendency to get stuck in a lot of areas.
