Today was one of those days that left me feeling emotionally defeated. 💔 I took my 5-year-old son, who has autism and ADHD, to his third soccer practice. I wanted him to experience something other children his age enjoy. But watching him struggle to follow instructions, stay focused, and participate in team activities was difficult. I found myself worrying about what the other parents and coaches were thinking. Eventually, I quietly left with him. The hardest part? He was happy. I was the one hurting. Sometimes I grieve the experiences I imagined motherhood would bring. I worry about his future, whether he'll fit in, and whether the world will understand him. And today, I realized something about myself. I keep putting pressure on him to experience the world the way other children do, when this is his normal. After soccer, he found happiness sitting in a pile of autumn leaves. Something so simple brought him joy. There's no perfect guidebook for raising a child with autism and ADHD. I'm learning as I go, making mistakes, questioning myself, and trying to become the mother he needs. I'm learning that acceptance isn't about giving up on his growth. It's about recognizing that his journey may look different from what I imagined. He wasn't disappointed in himself today. I don't want to teach him that he should be. 💙 To other parents raising neurodivergent children: Have you ever struggled with your own expectations while your child was simply enjoying life? #AutismParenting #ADHDParenting #Neurodiversity #creatorsearchinsights #MentalHealth
