@downinnadesert: Downtown Buckeye like you've never seen it before. Buckeye resident Clyde L. Seel recently colorized a set of historic photos of the town's early downtown and shared them with the Buckeye Valley Old Timers group on Facebook. The images show Main Street lined with storefronts, gas stations and parked cars, along with a crowd gathered outside the Buckeye Chamber of Commerce. One photo, dated January 1929, shows the words "Watch Us Grow" spelled out on the ground. Buckeye incorporated that same year, covering just 440 acres. The town's roots go back further. It was laid out in 1888 and originally named Sidney, after founder Malin Jackson's hometown in Ohio. But the Buckeye Canal, named for Ohio's nickname "The Buckeye State," was so important to farming in the valley that the town came to be known by its name instead. It became official in 1910. That same decade brought the railroad, the town's first car, a rail line to Phoenix and a state highway, setting off Buckeye's first boom. Nearly a century after that message was written on the ground, Buckeye has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the country. Colorized photos courtesy of Clyde L.
