@seawomanmarine: MARITIME NAVIGATION QUIZ | RULES OF THE ROAD Three vessels. One situation. Do you know who must give way? Imagine you are the officer of the watch on Vessel A. Vessels B and C are navigating nearby, and you must assess the situation carefully before deciding on the appropriate action. 🔹 Which vessel is required to give way? 🔹 What action should Vessel A take? 🔹 Which COLREGs rules would you apply to determine the correct course of action? Remember, a safe navigational decision depends on the vessels’ headings, relative positions, aspects, and the risk of collision. Never rely on a diagram alone without assessing the complete situation. Challenge yourself: Study the image, apply the COLREGs, and share your answer with the relevant rule number in the comments! ⚓ Test your knowledge. Think like an officer of the watch. #MaritimeQuiz #COLREGs #Navigation #MerchantNavy #DeckOfficer

. Which Vessel is Required to Give Way? Vessel A is the give-way vessel in relation to vessel C because Vessel C is crossing from A's starboard (right) side. - Vessel B is the give-way vessel in relation of vessel A because Vessel B is approaching from more than 22.5 degrees abaft A's beam (overtaking from behind). 2. What Action Should Vessel A Take? As the Officer of the Watch (OOW) on Vessel A, you are in a complex multi-vessel situation: Reduce speed / Slow down: This is the safest primary action. It allows Vessel C to cross safely ahead of you without you having to make an immediate, sharp turn to starboard that could cut directly into the path of the overtaking Vessel B. Monitor Vessel B: While you must maintain your general course and speed relative to B (since you are the stand-on vessel to B), you cannot blindly turn right into its path. Alter course to starboard (if needed): Once there is sufficient clearance from Vessel B, you can alter course to starboard to pass safely astern of Vessel C. 3. Which COLREGs Rules Apply? Rule 13 (Overtaking): Governs the relationship between Vessel B and Vessel A. Any vessel overtaking another must keep out of the way of the vessel being overtaken. Rule 15 (Crossing Situation): Governs the relationship between Vessel A and Vessel C. When two power-driven vessels are crossing, the vessel that has the other on its own starboard side (Vessel A) must keep out of the way. Rule 16 (Action by Give-way Vessel): Requires Vessel A (relative to C) and Vessel B (relative to A) to take early and substantial action to keep well clear. Rule 17 (Action by Stand-on Vessel): Requires Vessel A (relative to B) to initially maintain its course and speed, while remaining ready to take action if B fails to keep clear.
