@downinnadesert: You can still see the Milky Way with your own eyes in parts of Arizona, and Flagstaff is working to keep it that way. 🌌🌲 Flagstaff became the world’s first International Dark Sky City in 2001, thanks to decades of efforts to reduce light pollution and protect the night sky. ADOT recently completed a $1.1 million project replacing nearly 400 highway lights around Flagstaff with amber-colored LED lights that reduce light pollution while keeping roads illuminated. Unlike many major cities where artificial lighting makes it difficult to see the stars, Flagstaff has become one of the best places in the country for stargazing. The city’s commitment to protecting its night sky also helps preserve the conditions needed for astronomical research at nearby observatories. Sedona is also a dark sky community and between that and Flagstaff the sky above me is so amazing. coming from a light polluted city, it’s just so beautiful. And the wildlife is so much richer.

Sedona just down the road has had these strict lighting rules for years. At night you can be in Walmarts parking lot and still not see it. That town is so dark!!!!

Safford AZ has been like this for decades. There’s a city ordinance for lights due to the telescope on top of MT Graham.
