@saltyoccasionallysweet: Replying to @scrunchymom #greenscreen having children that listen is great, that means really good parenting on your end, you must know that all of that goes out the window in high stress, very chaotic situations. While that doesn’t matter to you because you already have these children…I wanted to spread awareness to people who WANT a big family because more times than not, they do not think about things like this.

Something about the way they use the word obedience and obey is giving me massive ick. I have an extraordinarily well behaved child. I have never thought of her as obedient.

As the eldest daughter in a large family, it sucks for us. Mom can't do it all, and we have to pick up the slack-every freaking time.

Obedience?! That’s not even in my parenting vocabulary. And guess what, my son is a great listener! I taught him the value of my rules/requests and he has learned to trust me as his mother. I never wanted him to be “obedient.” Yikes!!

My 9yo would die because he does not listen. Even to save his life. He would fight me the entire run. “Why are we running??!!! What do you mean I need to be quiet!!!” 🙄

I had a tornado hit my house, my kids were 1 and 2. I had brought them on the couch with me because I was paranoid (which paid off) but the second it hit, I literally threw them in the floor and I couldn’t get the couch over us, so I pulled a recliner on top of us but I couldn’t cover both of their bodies with my own. Think about this type of thing all the time…unfortunately.

This feels like an argument to make to encourage a parent to be physically fit. If not then use the buddy system. Find a trusted adult to go with you and your children in public. Or find a sitter to watch some or all of your children. If you can’t put the kids in a cart, find another adult to go with you, or find a sitter. I would recommend ordering online or doing a delivery. Large families aren’t going anywhere. But we can try and find ways to keep everyone safe while in public. Teaching your children the importance of hiding, fleeing, and fighting if necessary in extreme cases as these is extremely important. Those drills at school are only drills until it’s time to use them

so I'm the third oldest of 12. I asked this question as a child. she told me we would pray and dad would be on his way home ASAP. its sad to see my little sister following her footsteps being 30 and pregnant with her 8th kid

I'm just curious. I raised two kids and I use a wheelchair. Do you feel the same way about me? I couldn't not physically save them and if there was a shooting, my wheelchair would be a very bad thing.

I agree with her. And if we live our lives solely based upon the fear of what "could" happen, none of us would ever leave our homes. Yes, we need to be aware and smart, but to stop living because of the dangers of life would paralyze life in itself.

Listen, we were in a "shooting" situation a couple years ago when my kids were around 5 and 7. We were at a fairground area. My SO was quick enough to grab both the kids and run, Me? I did realize what happened for a hot minute. It took me much longer he was already long gone, everyone around me was long gone. I took off running and ended up hurt. Had the threat been "real" ( I say real because it was isolated threat but we didnt know that at the time we just knew gunshots were going off) and my SO not been there, my children would have been been in so much danger obedient or not!

How are people so confident about what they would do when it comes to 911 mass casualty events, natural disasters, etc. let alone those situations WITH a boat ton of kids?! I cooonstantly overthink about how I would absolutely fail in those situations even if I was just out by myself! 😅

Not even like an active shooter situation, but like a natural disaster-flash flooding, sudden tornado, earthquake, a fire…. Or one child runs off and is snatched up by someone or goes running into traffic! You have to think in a split second to leave your other children and trust them to stay put while you run after the one that ran off. Small children may be “obedient” at home, but there’s no way to control each child all at once especially if you’re by yourself. I’ve got 3 who are now 16, 11, and 8, and even THAT age gap was rough in the early years. Personally I know I can’t handle more than that. I’d have never left the house if they were closer in age when they were younger.

I’m not sure why all of these moms are getting offended. I had 3 under 2 years and 7 months before I turned 21. I can assure you one of my recurrent fears was something happening and me not be able to save all of them. I’d drive over a bridge or near water and be terrified bc if my car went into the water I knew I wouldn’t be able to save everyone, I’d for sure die trying sure but that doesn’t mean I could. Do I think that’s a reason to not have multiple kids close in age? No but I’m not mad you made a video pointing that out.

what most parents don't understand until they get into a stressful situation is that under pressure children panic and their ability to listen it's one of the first things to go they directly need you to pull them in the direction you need them to go they're not going to run after you or follow you or be quiet talk to any teacher when they do a school shooting drill none of the young kids in any of their elementary schools are quiet they all have to be bright with candy kindergartens and Young elementary School teachers are always in that's why I have candy in my closet because during situations like that these kids will not be quiet they will not listen they will not go where you want they need to be bribed with candy

My rule of thumb is to not have more children than you can take care of in all ways including financially as a single person.

People like to think they will be clearheaded in the case of an emergency, when they have no idea they will not be. I’ve been in some instances that panicked me, however, being a dispatcher and a victim advocate enforcement has really taught me how to remain calm and clearheaded until after the fact. However, 98% of adults are not like that. And children most definitely will not be like that. they are children, their stress level will go up. We just worked a huge event where we tag the children in case they get lost. So many parents would tell us they know my phone number, they know where to get to our meeting spot, guess how many children actually did that once they were lost? None. Because they are children and it’s OK for them to panic. It’s OK for you as an adult to panic as well. But if you cannot get your children to safety, you need to realize that you are their biggest liability.

While i do agree we shouldn’t be scared of what if situations, nobody who had been in any shooting expected they would ever be in one. Don’t ever count out that you wont be in one with how crazy this world is getting. Always be prepared. Have a plan.

Im a big believer that anything after 4 maybe 5 depending on the person, you can't physically take care of additional children. Most of the time, the older ones end up helping with the younger ones. Just ask the Duggers
