Got called out this morning for a diagnostic on a 2011 Nissan Maxima. Customer had two concerns: the car shut off while driving and wouldn’t restart for about 5 minutes, and the steering would randomly become hard to turn. First thing I did was scan the vehicle for codes. One that immediately caught my attention was P1217 – Engine Over Temperature Condition. Checked the coolant reservoir — basically empty. Checked the radiator — empty too. Maybe the coolant just disappeared 🫣😂 Added coolant and about 30 seconds later… my feet were getting wet. Got underneath and found the radiator leaking heavily from the side tank/seal about halfway down. While finishing up, I also noticed another slow leak toward the top of the radiator and found a small hole. So now we have an actual reason for that P1217. The computer’s freeze-frame data showed the engine had reached 137°C / 279°F when the code set. With the radiator losing coolant this badly, the overheating issue needs to be repaired before going any further with the intermittent shut-off/no-start complaint. As for the hard steering, I also confirmed the power steering rack is leaking. That’ll be another repair for another day. Diagnosis first, parts second. 🔧#MobileMechanic #RaymondsMobileServices #AutoRepair #mechanic #fyp
