i used to wash the foam every Saturday after rehearsal, when i was assistant choir director in a small Church of 300-400 members early 2000s. And I also get to Church early Sunday morning to make sure the insruments, the sound, the bass guitar, lead guitar are well tuned. I wasn't talented but my commitment and punctuality made me learn and got me appointed as assistant choir director

I once had to use a mic 🎤 with a foam cover which had so much spit on it, to back-up. 😳 I kept it very far away from my mouth. like 12inchs away. I didn't mind if I heard myself or not.

Sir, those grills rust with exposure to water. I personally wouldn't recommend using water on them. There are other alternatives to water to get the job done. Mouthwash and a soft brush is enough, or better, rubbing alcohol(isopropyl).
