Shoot, girl. I never switched to an open mic because I was afraid of losing my “mask voice” meaning… I don’t know, specific enunciation techniques and breathing techniques? This video only solidifies my choice to not use an open mic 😅😅 i’ve been considering it though since basically all of my work is remote since I live so rurally. But I get pretty great recognition with my mask now. I’ve had to global lots of stuff that it regularly mishears. I have had to play with SPM a lot in terms of how I say things and so perhaps you just need to do some practice of the same material over and over and see what you can do to modify tour speech to make it drop down correctly. Also definitely check your input settings. I have to have my mask dialed to 100 for SPM to do a good job at all.

How do you monitor your volume when speaking into the mask… to not whisper but not speak too loudly?

I know you’ve been using a headset mostly. Is it just not being used to the mask so maybe you’re not enunciating like you have in the past because now you’re restricted somewhat? Or did recognition tank after you modified the mask?

I know they say not to whisper and to learn the quiet voice, but I’ve found that whispering works for me with Speechmatics as long as I pay attention to moving my mouth more for clearer enunciation. Also play around with the mic volume because when I first got Speechmatics it was awful, but after adjusting the volume up it was way better.

Do you have your sound card plugged directly into your laptop instead of an adapter? I had recognition issues and I took off the adapter and the problem went away immediately.

Are you using the boost box or cloud? If you’re using the cloud and your recognition is still bad then I would think you’re possibly whispering?

Can you adjust the gain on whatever sound card or interface you use with your mask? My recognition improved a lot around roughly 40-45db. Also experiment with spm’s delay settings, mine is best around 2.85. Spm is very sensitive to cadence and inflection, it likes continuous naturally flowing speech. Your recognition will suffer from jaw and throat tension and pressured speech. push air from your abdomen, not your throat and keep your jaw loose so your consonants arent being muffled.

i’m having the same issue with my talk tech mask, i listened to the playback and i think the issue is the static for me, not sure if that’s the same issue for the martel though

I’ve never tried it, but I know you can analyze documents with spm just like we did with dragon

Were you nervous to have your husband drill a hole in your mask. My mask isn’t even a month old and I’m terrified to modify it like that. I’m guessing the purple muffle mit didn’t work the way you hoped?
