@drtoddphillips: Why do people leave Christianity? It isn’t always because they were hurt by the church, wanted to sin, stopped taking their faith seriously, or simply gave up. I spent more than 20 years as a Christian pastor. I studied the Bible, preached it, defended Christianity, and genuinely wanted it to be true. My deconstruction wasn’t a reaction against Christianity. It was a long process of examining what I believed, why I believed it, and whether the evidence still convinced me. Eventually, it didn’t. Sometimes people leave Christianity because they take the questions seriously and honestly reach a different conclusion. If Christians want to understand deconstruction and why people lose faith, that possibility has to be part of the conversation. #Deconstruction #ChristianDeconstruction #LeavingChristianity #Exvangelical #Agnostic

Being a Christian is not a hard life thing to strive to learn with a mind what God is. God is more tangible with you having a relational tie with him and trying out him like an experimental test on truth of scientific meaning and logic Emote with God who is most interesting, not reasoning like a person but only as one who has feelings. Ask God how he feels and how you feel and please Him to be satisfied with Him in a relationship as He too is a Person though a more sophiscated one. You only reap back what you sow with him. Try a different route and seek joy of living with Him than to leaving in a unsatisfied way. If you have spiritual success you will not be leaving the goal post but walking to it and loving it. It did not work out but God should be your bestie and yet humble creator even just you regard as a person you walk out why burn your bridge with Him when he did not start the fire.

I was the opposite. I was a staunch atheist and nothing could get me to change my mind because I knew science (I'm a scientist) and religion was just the opiate of the masses. But the deeper you get into the ontology and where logic comes from or the fact that even us believing there is a right and wrong way to behave, means an objective epistemological Truth must exist. It's like CS Lewis said, the first gulp of science makes you an atheist, but at the bottom of the glass you'll find God.

mine was the realization that God was an asshole. imagine if a parent told you to do something. if you didn't do it, then you would be tortured, but if you did do it, you wouldn't be. do you really have a choice? also, I never understood how finite sins lead to eternal punishment. love me or else isn't a loving God.

The entire basis of Abrahamic religions is fear. Fear of death, fear of the unknown, fear of being forgotten, fear of separation, fear of meaninglessness. Only by facing and overcoming our fears can we experience freedom in this life.

I remember asking my Christian friends how can people in parts of the world where they haven't heard the name Jesus have the chance to go to heaven if they can't worship something they don't know. I was told that they should look at nature and just "know." Know what? How can they "know" a name they haven't heard before?

It started for me in high school when I realized geography is a big factor in whether you went to heaven or hell. If you were born into a Christian country, you had a good chance. Otherwise, you probably didn’t. It made me feel like if God was real, he was unkind and unfair to let chance determine your eternity. It kind of all just continued to unravel from there.

If you research religion, it very quickly falls apart. When religious people inquire about religion, they’re looking for confirmation bias.

In the age of information- “seek and you will find” and if you truly seek, you can no longer try to make sense of things that do not make sense. I never had peace that surpassed all understanding until I left church and Christianity
