Set during World War II, the film tells the story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who initially comes to occupied Poland hoping to make money from the war. As the persecution and mass murder of Jewish people intensify, Schindler gradually becomes involved in efforts to protect his Jewish workers from deportation and death. The story is primarily set in Kraków, Poland, during the German occupation. Schindler establishes a factory that produces cookware and other goods for the German military. Because of the economic conditions created by the war, he is able to build a successful business while employing Jewish workers from the Kraków ghetto. Schindler is initially motivated largely by business. He recognizes that Jewish labor can be inexpensive and that cooperation with German officials can help his factory succeed. However, as he witnesses the increasingly brutal treatment of Jewish civilians, his attitude begins to change. An important character in the film is Itzhak Stern, a Jewish accountant who becomes closely associated with Schindler and his factory. Stern helps organize the workforce and becomes an important link between Schindler and the Jewish workers. Their relationship develops as Schindler becomes increasingly concerned about the fate of the people working for him. The film portrays the Kraków ghetto and the persecution of Jewish civilians under Nazi occupation. Families are separated, homes are taken away, and people are forced into increasingly dangerous conditions. The liquidation of the Kraków ghetto becomes one of the major turning points in Schindler's story. One of the central figures representing the Nazi system is Amon Göth, the commandant of the Płaszów concentration camp. Göth is portrayed as a powerful and brutal figure who has authority over the prisoners. His actions demonstrate the arbitrary violence and dehumanization that characterized the Nazi concentration camp system. As the war progresses, Schindler becomes increasingly determined to protect his workers. When the Germans begin deporting prisoners and preparing to move Jewish workers away from his factory, Schindler uses his connections, money, and influence to try to keep them alive. The title of the film refers to the list of names created for Schindler's workers. Being included on the list means that a person is considered essential to the factory and may therefore avoid deportation. The list becomes a symbol of the lives Schindler and his associates attempt to save. Schindler's transformation is one of the most important elements of the story. He begins as a businessman interested in profit and gradually becomes focused on saving human lives. The film does not portray this change as something that happens instantly. Instead, his experiences gradually force him to confront the consequences of the Nazi policies surrounding him. The film is particularly notable for its visual style. Much of Schindler's List was filmed in black and white, giving it the appearance of historical photographs and documentary footage. Spielberg uses this style to create a serious atmosphere and emphasize the historical setting. One of the most recognizable visual moments is the appearance of a young girl wearing a red coat. While most of the film is presented in black and white, the red coat stands out. The scene is used as a symbolic moment and represents Schindler's growing awareness of the human consequences of the violence surrounding him. The film also emphasizes the importance of individual lives. Instead of presenting the Holocaust only through statistics, it follows specific people and families, allowing the audience to understand that each person affected by the persecution had an individual identity, relationships, hopes, and experiences. Schindler's List is based on the historical novel Schindler's Ark by
