As someone that worked in retail customer service both small businesses and big corporation stores. This conversation should go like this. Kelly “is this for sale?”. SA “Yes it is! That’s our display model because the artists commissioned it for us, however, we can put you in contact with the artist.” Saying that a small business that sells something that expensive is “casual,” is a euphemism for bad customer service. That’s a choice in how one wants to run their business. Customers are all the same. Kelly Clarkson or a common person. Most people are over this nonchalant customer service. Coming from someone that has worked in customer service and is conscious of treating other retail employees with respect. I’m done making excuses for the crap service that has been worsening over the years.

If the item wasn’t for sale, the signage should have reflected that. Easy peasy.

Yes, you had a good experience. So therefore no one EVER can have a bad one.

why can't they simply have a sign that says NOT FOR SALE. Also normal customers service would say "sorry this one's not fir sale but let me get the name if the artist and you can see about commison, but no he said a few words to her most likely "not for sale" then turned away. ignores her. Clearly horrible customer service.

It's not that hard for the store to have had some common sense:
"Singing bird.
Automata by Bliss Kolb.
Not for sale. Ask about an artist commission"

No, giving her elevator eyes and suggesting she buy the cheaper alternative was suggesting he was uppity.

Do any of the responses from the store support a misunderstanding? Maybe I missed something

That’s why they were nice to you. Because you can’t buy something they didn’t want to sell it. Why put the price of something that’s not for sale?

Just because they are a small business doesn't give them the right to treat people this way

Ok, here is what I think. Maybe she didn't encounter the very blunt New Yorkers yet. Because think about it. Even though her show was in New York, she always Identified as a Texan woman and a southern person. I think she is more used to the South. And, maybe this is just me making assumptions. But to my knowledge, she has never interacted with New Yorkers outside of her show right? So I would think that she thought since it was a small business it would be the southern charm mixed with modern museum aesthetic of a small business. Now does this excuse either party? No. Not at all. But could it explain everything about the way Kelly felt? It is a possibility.

No one should’ve bought it! When they first said “ it wasn’t for sale “ that’s display only sign , that wasn’t there either! Now it’s for sale at $15 million dollar? Store had fluctuating prices ? I did see a “ spin the wheel “ see what you pay?
