@therapistinrecovery: Mental compulsions are a BEAST because we have very little control over our thoughts and thinking. It’s like running on a hamster wheel- it feels like we are going somewhere with our ruminating but we aren’t…Because we don’t get out of overthinking with more thinking! 🙃 And these mental compulsions have to be addressed specifically if we want to get better. Managing them (or should I say letting go of them) is possible and might actually be more simple than you think! Are you ready to get off the hamster wheel? I have a hard time discerning the OCD thoughts vs a normal/"my own" thought. it all sounds the same at this point because I've been dealing with it so long 😔

Question, what if the mental compulsion is to run away from the feeling and do things to distract myself physically or mentally?

Everytime I have to drive into the town I live in, I drive by the spot my husband cheated on me in…… I literally don’t go south half the time because the anxiety is so bad I know it will completely ruin my day🥺

I say “oh that’s just a thought ocd gave me. It’s not time for that it’s time for xyz” like 20 times a day and it’s really what you gotta do.

I tell myself I can come back to the ruminating if I just take a minute to stop obsessing over it. I usually give myself a few minutes to stop and then come back to it and ‘work it out’ in my mind and by then the alarms in my brain are a lot quieter and I can reason with some logic to the mental compulsions I was trying to do. I imagine this isn’t the best method but it’s what I’ve been doing lately to try to create distance between me and the obsession I’m ruminating about

@claireee096: I’m currently in therapy and taking meds (fluvoxamine) for GAD & social anxiety. I’ve previously wondered if I had OCD due to the nature of my anxiety but brought it up with my therapist who advised me that she didn’t think seeking a diagnosis was necessary. I’m having a hard time determining/second guessing whether seeking a diagnosis is necessary for my treatment. Do you encourage people to seek out a specialist or are there times when distinguishing between anxiety and OCD isn’t necessary for treatment?

isn't it important to not try to stop the thoughts? it's better to simply acknowledge you're having anxiety and then disengage by grounding yourself. at least that's what I've been practicing with ACT

What does a person do if they have checking OCD (fear based), locking, checking oven etc. they have to leave to get to work which is stressful. No time to stop and reason with the OCD. By the time they get to work they are already stressed out for the day. How does one approach that?

How do you break the compulsion if your brain has been making you do it for decades? If it’s wired into your brain .

@Rachael | OCD Specialist rumination also counts right? Like playing detective and try to “solve” our obsession?
