@em.myco: most people don't understand how genes work. most genes aren't deterministic, rather, they slightly tweak probabilities and cause small changes that add up over many many genes. a good example is autism. you wouldn't be able to make a reliable genetic test for autism even though it is genetic - it's too complex! Sources: [1] Grove et al. (2019). Identification of common genetic risk variants for autism spectrum disorder. Nature Genetics [2] Litman et al. (2025). Decomposition of phenotypic heterogeneity in autism reveals underlying genetic programs. Nature Genetics #autism #Science #biology #genetics #stem
I thought there was a growing movement away from it being a spectrum for this very reason

autism is such a fascinating field of study its frustrating how much of it is still coloured by stigma tho

If the autistic person has all 12 genes, are they grand autistic?

This is great stuff. Environment can definitely amplify or suppress autistic behaviour. I would say environmental factors could easily push you across the boundary of being diagnosed with autism Vs not.

There's also a study that showed autism likely originated in the cambrian explosion, when organisms started developing vertebrae! :)

Like most of biology as well! People like to associate 1 gene to 1 condition because it is simpler to understand, when as a matter of fact, the vast majority of conditions and traits we see is the result of multi gene interactions. Yes there are conditions where 1 gene play a significant role, but even in those conditions, multi-gene effect still exist, just a bit less prominent. It is a complete fantasy to think a complex biological network with thousands of genes and millions of proteins like the human body would operate on a 1 gene - 1 trait basis. Biology is complex.
