USS Wolverine (IX-64) was a unique U.S. Navy training aircraft carrier during World War II. It was originally built as a paddle-wheel passenger steamer for the Great Lakes, and kept the paddle-wheel. Alongside her sister ship, USS Sable (IX-81), she provided essential carrier landing practice for pilots who couldn't travel to the ocean-going fleet carriers. Together, USS Wolverine and USS Sable qualified 17,820 naval aviators for carrier duty during World War II. They also recorded approximately 116,000 carrier landings combined.
