🚨 AMBER GUYGER HAS BEEN GRANTED PAROLE — AND I WENT BACK AND WATCHED HER TESTIMONY This is one of those cases I have always had complicated feelings about. In 2018, off-duty Dallas police officer Amber Guyger walked into Botham Jean’s apartment believing it was her own. Botham was inside HIS OWN HOME. Guyger believed she was confronting an intruder, pulled her service weapon and shot him. But think about this from Botham’s perspective for a second. He was the one sitting safely inside his own apartment when an armed stranger suddenly came through his door. We can’t know exactly what Botham thought in those final moments — but if anyone had reason to believe an intruder had entered their home, it was Botham Jean. 😩 He was 26 years old and completely innocent. Guyger was convicted of murder in 2019 and sentenced to 10 years. Now, after serving roughly 7 years, she has been granted parole. I went back and watched Amber testify at her trial. She cried. She apologized. She said she hated herself for what happened and said she wished Botham had been the one with the gun and she had been the one who died and I believe her. That doesn't change the fact that an innocent man lost his life. And here’s something I’ve wondered about this case for years: Did Amber Guyger’s police training actually contribute to what happened that night? I’m NOT saying her training excuses what she did. A jury found her guilty of murder. I’m wondering whether being trained to confront perceived threats and to basically take out the threat — combined with having her service weapon immediately available — influenced what happened during those few seconds. Prosecutors questioned why she didn’t back away and call for backup. They pointed to her de-escalation training, and Guyger acknowledged that she could have backed away. And that leaves me with a question: If Amber Guyger had NOT been a police officer carrying a gun that night, would Botham Jean still be alive? Maybe she runs. Maybe she backs out and calls 911. Maybe she realizes she’s standing at the wrong apartment. We’ll never know. But there’s an awful irony here that I hadn’t really stopped to think about before: Amber Guyger believed Botham Jean was a threat inside what she thought was her home. In reality, Botham was in his own home — and the armed stranger who had just entered it was Amber Guyger. Do you believe her remorse was genuine? Do you agree with granting her parole after approximately 7 years of a 10-year sentence? #AmberGuyger #BothamJean #TrueCrime #BreakingNews #TrueCrimeCommunity
