we are a site developer, and use D5K2s, D4s, D6K2‘s to scrape/clear. Finish grading is an art, definitely going to need a finish grader operator, which won’t be cheap. Get some quotes for land clearing (trees incl) - in SW Florida and it runs $13,000 plus an acre for mechanical land clearing.

I would hire someone if it was me. Maybe you can ask the people who do it for you, to teach you the basics? Most are happy to teach you some things. If you’re going to build a house, road, and infrastructure. I feel it would make sense to bite the bullet, pay the money, and get it all done in one shot. If you rent the dozer you’re going to have to rent it multiple times (depending on how long you have it) to clear the woods and grade the road/pad. You likely aren’t saving yourself much $$ renting it. Especially since you’ll likely be bringing in a crew to get the appropriate grading and pads built.
