@genzbusinessanalyst: When families were forced to leave their homes in 2023, many had no choice but to leave their beloved animals behind. But veterinarian Dr. Galia Melman Shalev refused to let those animals be forgotten. She and her husband returned to evacuated communities in Israel's western Negev to rescue pets and other animals left behind. When their clinic reached capacity, they transformed a horse stable into a temporary shelter where volunteers cared for the animals and helped reunite them with their displaced families. Shalev later spent three months providing veterinary care to evacuees' pets in Eilat. On September 9, 2026, WSAVA named her the recipient of its 2026 Companion Animal Welfare Award. Her story is a reminder that when people are forced to leave everything behind, someone still has to look after the animals they love.
