@samuelszuchan: The Japanese government has estimated that there are about 1.46 million hikikomori, people who rarely leave their homes for six months or more. Not far from Tokyo, the nonprofit New Start sent young women, called rental sisters, to visit them at their homes. In 2007, a rental sister, a former welfare worker without counseling qualifications, said that "99% refuse". In one male shut-in’s case, her sealed letters were not opened, so she sent postcards instead. Leaving, she'd say, "OK, I'll leave this in the hallway," and leave something of hers (a CD, a manga), so she would have to come back for it. She thought of the young man inside, his heart pounding, wondering whether she'd come back tomorrow or the day after. Once, a loud hard-rock CD she had lent was returned with the message "I hate this stuff." "Yes!" she said, because he had finally thrown something back. Another rental sister asked a 20-year-old who had been shut in since the fourth grade to come outside. She asked him to meet her at the nearest bus stop to his home, and he came in his pajamas. Each meeting after that was farther out from his home: Atsugi Station, then Machida, then Shinjuku. Eventually, he came alone to Gyotoku, where New Start's dormitory is. A 2023 book by New Start tells the story of a man, given the pseudonym Daigo, who remained shut in for a decade, from his twenties until the age of 38, living on money sent to him each month by his parents. He ignored their letters, their calls, and an in-person visit. Then his parents told him that they were stopping the bank transfers, and wrote, "from now on, collect it from the New Start person." When a rental brother came to the door with his living expenses, Daigo opened it. Three and a half months later, he got a job. The book tells of another hikikomori, called Ayumu, also a pseudonym. At first his parents said, "our son is sensitive"; then they said, "No more visits, thank you." Over eight months of trying to reach him, the staff never heard him speak. 10 years later, his parents contacted New Start again. He was 35, and for five years he had not left the house at all. In 2024, after 30 years, New Start said that it would stop taking on new cases. Its founder, Futagami Nōki, had urged parents not to try to bear the burden of a shut-in child alone. But they kept doing so, and that was what, he said, "we couldn't beat."

i work in behavioral health, I've noticed an increase in agoraphobia since 2020. I have a few clients with this and typically we start with zoom until they are comfortable with me to go into their homes with the hope of slowly getting them out into the community

The parents are 100% to blame for enabling this behavior. When I was idling away after failing university my parents set me a deadline. Money will stop and I was forced to get off my lazy ass and got into a trade school and am doing fine now.

Six years and counting, unfortunately. I wouldn’t call myself a hikikomori because my circumstances are too different I think. But I always wonder how others manage. I find living like this rough as hell. Granted I’m also chronically ill so I’m not able to do much even inside my home, which I think those in better health would be able to. Even if it’s just gaming and watching tv and such. Still haven’t thrown in the towel, but man I’d love to be able to just go outside again and also invite others over.

I have a friend thats like this, thank fully after a altercation with his dad he now ask me if we could hangout in person, which is something he never does, he stopped going outside and stopped school when we were in 9th grade, that was before the start of pandemic, now im in my 4th year in college, he has never left his house to even buy things ever since, it has been 8 years since he set a foot outside his house, i tried multiple times to get him to come out, i always failed, but now after the altercation he has become open to the idea of going out, we have been friends since the 3rd grade, i felt guilty for all these years not being able to help him, now i will try again.

i sort of live this life except my parents don’t give me money. i don’t leave the house but it’s not agoraphobia. i have some social anxiety, but it’s moreso that i am refer being inside. it’s overstimulating, bright, people are hard to talk to. i don’t have friends or work (wfh) so there’s nowhere to go.
