A uniform. A key. A gate. A serious face. But after serving in The Gambia Prison Service since March 2023, I have learned that there is much more behind this uniform than what people see from the outside. Being a prison officer has taught me discipline, patience, responsibility, communication, teamwork and, above all, how to deal with people. And as a woman, the experience has been even more meaningful. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ Being a female prison officer is not about proving that women can be โ€œtougherโ€ than men. It is about showing that women can carry responsibility, maintain authority, make difficult decisions, remain professional under pressure and still understand the human being standing in front of them. There are days when you have to be firm. There are days when you have to listen. There are days when you have to de-escalate a situation instead of escalating it. And there are days when simply remaining calm is part of the job. That is something this profession teaches you very quickly: Authority is not about shouting. Strength is not always about force. And leadership is not always about being the loudest person in the room. One of the things I have grown into within the Service is my work around media, communication and the camera. ๐Ÿ“ท Today, I can put on the same uniform and serve in a security environment, then pick up a camera and tell a story about the people, training, activities and work happening within the Service. That combination has changed how I see the profession. I don't only see the officer standing at the gate. I see the officer behind the responsibility. I see the woman doing a difficult job while carrying her own responsibilities outside the uniform๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿซ‚. I see the officer who has to remain professional even when the public may not understand what the job demands. And I see the importance of telling the story properly. Because sometimes, people only see the uniform ๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฒ. They don't see the training behind it. They don't see the discipline behind it. They don't see the long hours, the responsibility, the decisions, the emotional control or the fact that prison officers are human beings with families and lives too. ๐Ÿ“ท That is one reason I love the camera. It allows me to show another side of a profession that many people rarely stop to understand. So, why should you become a prison officer?๐Ÿค” Not because it is an easy job. Not because the uniform looks good. Not because of the keys. But because it gives you an opportunity to serve society in a place where security, humanity, discipline and rehabilitation meet. And if you are a woman considering the profession, don't automatically think:

Can I lead? Can I serve? Can I work with people, even in difficult circumstances? If your answer is yes, there is space for you. And perhaps one day, someone will look at your photograph in uniform and think: โ€œIf she can do it, maybe I can too.โ€ ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ”‘ That, for me, is another reason the uniform matters. ..... โœ๏ธ _Corporal Jainaba M Jallow Prison Officer ๐Ÿ”‘๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฒ ..... #WomenInUniform #PrisonOfficer #GambiaPrisonService #WomenInService #TheGambia
