For short context: First picture was her darkening her skin tone to cosplay a Clawdeen Wolf, a canonical Afro-Latina character. Nonblack people can cosplay as Clawdeen without changing their race to do so. Second picture was her wearing Black braids and complaining that people didn’t tell her that getting them would make her hair fall out. Multiple people have told her this and ignored them, despite the fact that wearing those type of braids were culturally and historically insensitive in the first place. Third picture is her wearing Black braids again. You can cosplay as avatar with your natural hair. If you feel the need to wear a cultural hairstyle of a group that continuously asks you to not wear it, think about why having an accurate cosplay matters more to you than respecting the wishes of the Black community. Fourth picture was her wearing Native American attire and calling it “Indian” and seeing it as a vibe rather than an actual culture. Fifth picture was her using Quinceañeras and talking about them as a trend and not an actual cultural tradition. This post is made not just to call out how some people are quick to defend microaggressions and overt racism, but to think about how we can educate ourselves on other cultures and backgrounds so we can come to more of an understanding of one another instead of being quick to say “it’s just a cosplay” or “yall are too woke”. #nataliereynolds #racism #nativeamericanculture #mexicanculture #blackculture
