SHOULD YOUR CHILD BE AFRAID OF YOU? I’M JUST ASKING. 🤔🇬🇭 Ghanaian parents, I have a simple question for you. When your child sees you coming, should they feel safe or frightened? When your child makes a mistake, should their first thought be: “How do I tell my mum or dad?” Or: “How do I hide this before they find out?” Think about it. Some parents are proud to say: “My children fear me!” But is that something we should be celebrating? A child who fears you may obey you when you’re present. But does that mean they understand right from wrong? Does it mean they trust you? Does it mean they’ll come to you when they’re struggling? THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RESPECT AND FEAR. Respect can grow through guidance, consistency, fairness and love. Fear can make a child hide mistakes, suppress emotions or avoid asking for help. And Ghanaian parents, here is something worth considering. IF YOUR CHILD IS AFRAID TO TELL YOU ABOUT A SMALL MISTAKE, HOW WILL THEY FIND THE COURAGE TO TELL YOU ABOUT A SERIOUS PROBLEM? Discipline is important. Boundaries are necessary. Children must learn responsibility and consequences. BUT MUST A CHILD BE TERRIFIED OF THEIR PARENT TO LEARN THESE THINGS? Your child should understand that you will correct them when they’re wrong. But they should also know that when life becomes difficult, you are someone they can turn to for protection, guidance and understanding. PARENTS, DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO BEHAVE BECAUSE THEY FEAR YOU, OR BECAUSE THEY UNDERSTAND THE VALUES YOU HAVE TAUGHT THEM? I’m not saying children shouldn’t respect their parents. I’m asking whether we have sometimes confused fear with respect in Ghanaian parenting. SHOULD YOUR CHILD BE AFRAID OF YOU? I’M JUST ASKING. LET’S HAVE AN INTELLIGENT CONVERSATION. 👇🏾 MINDSHIFT360 | Let’s Believe, Shift and Rise. #MindShift360 #FamilyTalks #GhanaianParenting #ParentChildRelationship #RespectNotFear
