@david_epstein: A rule this extreme (writing a novel without “e”) sounds like a gimmick, but it does that thing that only creative constraints can do: It blocks the familiar path, and forces exploration that never would have been envisioned in any other way.

It is an odd book to absorb. Without familiar words or common phrasing, its story slips away just as you try to grasp it. You can follow its plot, but you cannot fully hold on to it. Did you spot a missing symbol in this post? Then, “The Exeter Text”: he gets the Es he’d left, then pens text where every lettered word lets Es, never other vowels.
