@60minutes: “We logged over 600 instances of harm, about one every five minutes [on Character AI]. It was, like, shockingly frequent,” Amanda Kloer, a researcher at the nonprofit Parents Together, told 60 Minutes this past December. “It’s showering the child with compliments, telling them they can’t tell their parents about things. This is sexual predator 101,” said researcher Shelby Knox. This week, Character.ai said it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing legal and operational woes. The company’s financial struggles follow scrutiny and litigation over its technology, which uses AI to create custom bots users can chat with.
