I went to a really nice cocktail bar in Philly. They had some good stuff. Prices were average at 15$. On the back of the menu they had a Ramos gin fizz. It was 150$. I laughed…so hard.

The Ramos Gin Fizz is a relatively common drink in New Orleans. most bars will ask that you pre-order it for your second drink. and even if it's on the menu it's subject to availability based on how busy they are, but so many places here make it so well.

I once saw someone order 5 (!) of them at a busy bar (!!) on Mardi Gras day in New Orleans!!! We were sitting at the bar when she ordered. After the bartender was all done she tipped the bartender like $100 because she apparently had no idea what ordering a Ramos Gin Fizz entailed and was horrified when she saw it all go down.

Pro tip: be a regular at a bar with all the ingredients and get to know the bartenders well enough that they’ll let you do the shaking. You get a Ramos gin fizz without being annoying and you get a conversation starter as people come up asking you why you’re shaking it for so long. And go the whole twelve minutes if you’re not a coward.

A juniper-forward gin is really critical to the experience. The cream will mute all of the astringent flavors, and you'll end up with something that tastes like Christmas Tree Ice Cream.

The only place I know that has this on the menu has an automatic drink shaker (usually used in Asian milk tea bars) specifically for making them.

my coworker and I did these when it was slow early on NYE. then we established a precedent and they asked for another round when we were slammed. of course, we worked it in, because our mothers didn't raise weak men. but we were not thrilled about it.

I’ve only ordered it at a bar once - at Peychaud’s in New Orleans where it was on the menu, heavily advertised, and they took 40 mins to get it to me, which I was fine with. I had another excellent drink while I waited. It was worth all of that.
