Salah is the formal prayer, performed five times a day at fixed times: Fajr before sunrise, Dhuhr after midday, Asr in the late afternoon, Maghrib just after sunset and Isha at night. It is obligatory on every adult Muslim of sound mind, and it is the second pillar of Islam. Before praying, a Muslim performs wudu, the washing. Then they face the Kabah in Makkah, which is called the Qiblah. Every Muslim on earth faces that same point. The prayer itself is made of units called rak'ahs. Each one combines standing, bowing, prostration and sitting. It begins by raising the hands and saying "Allahu akbar", Allah is greater. What is recited. Surah Al-Fatihah is recited in every single rak'ah, without exception. After it, a further short surah (such as Al-Ikhlas) is added, and this is where the rule differs: in the fard prayers that surah is added in the first two rak'ahs only, and in the remaining rak'ahs it is Al-Fatihah alone before bowing. In the sunnah and nafl prayers, a surah is added after Al-Fatihah in every rak'ah. So in Maghrib, which is three fard rak'ahs, the extra surah comes in the first two and not the third. In Fajr, which is two, it comes in both. In bowing, a Muslim says Subhana rabbiyal adheem. In prostration, Subhana rabbiyal a'la. The final sitting. After the prostrations, a Muslim sits back and recites the tashahhud, which begins At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat and contains the testimony of faith, Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallah wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh. The index finger is raised during that testimony. Then comes the durood, the prayer upon the Prophet (peace be upon him), beginning Allahumma salli ala Muhammadin wa ala ali Muhammad. Then a short du'a, commonly Rabbi j'alni muqimas-salati wa min dhurriyyati, "My Lord, make me one who keeps up the prayer, and from my descendants too" (Qur'an 14:40). The prayer ends with the salam: the head turns to the right, Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah, then to the left, the same. Only the head turns. The body stays facing the Qiblah. How many rak'ahs. The obligatory (fard) rak'ahs are: Fajr 2, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3, Isha 4, making seventeen a day. Alongside them are sunnah prayers the Prophet (peace be upon him) kept regularly, and voluntary nafl ones. (Fard counts are agreed by all schools. The sunnah counts differ slightly between them, mainly on the sunnah before Dhuhr and on whether witr is sunnah or wajib.) What it does. The Qur'an says: "Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers a decree of specified times" (4:103), and describes its effect: "Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing" (29:45). The Prophet (peace be upon him) compared it to a river: "If there was a river at the door of one of you in which he bathed five times a day, would any dirt remain on him? That is the likeness of the five prayers, by which Allah erases sins" (Bukhari 528, Muslim 667). He also said that whoever prays Fajr is under Allah's protection for that day (Muslim 657), and that whoever prays the two cool prayers, Fajr and Asr, will enter Paradise (Bukhari 574, Muslim 635). And there is a simpler truth in it too. Life is loud. Five times a day everything stops, the phone goes down, and for a few minutes there is nothing to do but stand still and be quiet. That alone changes a day. 🕌 New here? We make simple, accurate videos explaining Islam, for everyone, Muslim or not. Follow along.#salah #revert #newtoislam #wudu #baby
