On May 1, 1898, after the U.S. declared war on Spain, Theodore Roosevelt resigned as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to form a volunteer cavalry regiment. With Colonel Leonard Wood, he organized the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the Rough Riders. The regiment was recruited from a wide range of backgrounds, including Ivy League athletes, ranchers and cowboys from the Southwest, lawmen, miners, and Native Americans. The unit numbered approximately 1,060 men. The Rough Riders were mustered in San Antonio, Texas, and trained in San Antonio and Tampa, Florida. Due to a shortage of transport space, most of the horses and mules were left behind in Florida. The regiment arrived in Cuba in June 1898 and fought as infantry. The Rough Riders saw combat at the Battle of Las Guasimas on June 24, 1898, and then in the major engagement of the war, the Battle of San Juan Heights on July 1, 1898. At San Juan Heights, U.S. forces were ordered to take Kettle Hill and San Juan Hill, which were heavily defended by Spanish troops. The Rough Riders, alongside the 9th and 10th Cavalry regiments, charged Kettle Hill. Roosevelt, the only mounted officer in the advance, led the charge on horseback. The hill was taken, which helped secure the subsequent taking of San Juan Hill. The fighting was intense and close-quarters. The Rough Riders suffered significant casualties from Spanish Mauser rifle fire. The charge became one of the most famous actions of the Spanish-American War. The regiment was mustered out of service in September 1898, after just four months of service. 37 members were killed in action and many more were lost to tropical disease. The success of the Rough Riders brought national fame to Roosevelt. It established his public image as a leader of courage and action, which helped lead to his election as Governor of New York later that year, Vice President in 1900, and President in 1901. #History #historytok #american #patriot #usa
