Mercy Nyambeki is the sole survivor of the July 1, 2016 smash-up on the Kisii-Kilgoris Highway that killed seven of her friends in a Toyota Noah van on their way to an all-white birthday party in Magena. It was a Friday. The group left Nairobi just after 10 in the morning. They had talked about using matatus but decided to pool money and hire two cars — a Toyota Noah and a Voxy — because Magena sits a fair distance past Kisii town. Mercy, 22, a fourth-year Bachelor of Commerce student at Kenyatta University, sat in the back of the Noah. With her were fellow KU students, a Dedan Kimathi University student, and a couple of others who had already finished school. Photos were taken on the road. Some of those pictures later flooded social media after the news broke. They reached Kisii around 7 p.m. The group split. The Voxy stayed behind in town. The Noah continued toward Magena. A male colleague who had driven from Nairobi handed over the wheel. Duncan Nyanaro, a second-year civil engineering student at Dedan Kimathi and the only son of a local school principal, took the final stretch. Somewhere near Etora in Sameta, just after 8 p.m., the Noah met an oncoming saloon car and a canter. What really happened differ on who tried to overtake what, but the result was the same. Head-on impact. The Noah was crushed. Bodies stayed trapped in the twisted metal while crowds gathered and police struggled to push through. Some of the young people died instantly. Others were pulled out dead or dying. The canter driver later died in hospital. Eight people in total did not walk away. Mercy heard a loud bang. Then everything went blank. When she came to briefly she tried to shake Valarie Isoe. Valarie did not answer. Mercy blacked out again. The next thing she knew she was in a bed at Kisii Level Five Hospital, one side of her face bandaged, an IV line in her arm, her body in pain but still breathing. The dead included Vina Morangi Isoe, 20, a KU education student, and her younger sister Valarie, 18. Pauline Nyanchama. Mary Wanjiru Maina. Dorothy Nyakerario. Duncan Nyanaro. And the drivers of the other vehicles. Their mothers and fathers arrived at the mortuary and the hospital the next day. One widowed mother, Rachel Muthiga, said she blamed herself for talking her two daughters out of attending a cousin’s burial in Meru that same day. If they had gone to Meru, she said, they would still be alive. Mercy spoke from her hospital bed the following day. She was weak but clear. She said they had been going to a friend’s birthday. She said she never imagined the photos they took on the road would become the last images of her friends. She thanked God she was still here. Her mother, Grace Moraa, sat nearby and could not hide the relief mixed with shock. The Voxy group reached Magena without knowing what had happened to the others. The party never happened. The wreckage stayed on the highway overnight. That is what happened on the Kisii-Kilgoris road on the first of July 2016. One young woman walked out of the wreckage. Seven of her friends did not.
