@slideshowhistorian: By November 9, 1918 the Canadian Corps was on the outskirts of Mons, the Belgian town where British troops had fought their first battle in 1914, and General Currie had orders to capture it. The armistice was signed at 5:10 a.m. on November 11 but would not take effect until 11:00 a.m., and Canadian headquarters received the news at about 6:30. Private George Price was killed by a sniper at 10:58, two minutes before the armistice, the last Commonwealth soldier killed in the war. On May 6, 1945 Soviet fronts attacked German Army Group Centre, about 900000 men under Field Marshal Schörner, one day after the people of Prague rose against the Germans. Germany signed its unconditional surrender on May 8, but many units in Bohemia kept fighting or tried to reach the American lines. Soviet tanks entered Prague on May 9 and fighting continued until May 11, with some small units holding out even longer. Napoleon abdicated on April 6, 1814, but the couriers with the news only left Paris on April 7 and did not reach the armies in the south in time. On Easter Sunday, April 10, the Duke of Wellington attacked Marshal Soult's about 42000 French defenders at Toulouse with about 50000 British, Portuguese and Spanish troops. The allies took the key heights but lost about 4500 men against about 3200 French, and Soult signed an armistice on April 17. The Treaty of Ghent was signed on December 24, 1814, but the news had not reached the Gulf Coast, and the treaty took effect only when both governments ratified it on February 16, 1815. On January 8 about 7500 British soldiers under Sir Edward Pakenham attacked Andrew Jackson's about 4500 defenders, entrenched behind a canal and earthworks. In about half an hour the attack failed, Pakenham was killed and nearly 2000 British were killed, wounded or missing, while the Americans lost only about 8 to 13 killed. Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865, but Confederate forces in Texas were still in the field and the commanders at Brownsville knew about it. On May 12 and 13 about 800 Union troops, including the 62nd U.S. Colored Infantry, fought about 350 Confederates under Colonel John S. Ford near Palmito Ranch, and the Confederates won. Private John J. Williams is generally recognized as the last man killed in the war, and the Confederate Trans-Mississippi Department surrendered on June 2. #History #militaryhistory #palmitoranch #battleofneworleans #armisticeday

FCA :
Mons was not fought when the war was started over, technically or otherwise. No one knew if the Germans follow armistice agreement. In some places, they didn’t.
