@sobering__thoughts: Carl Jung believed that to understand human behaviour, we must first understand the unconscious forces driving it. He spent much of his life studying his own mind, confronting his fears, emotions and the parts of himself that were difficult to acknowledge. This led to his concept of the shadow — the parts of ourselves we suppress, deny or refuse to face. When we apply this thinking to addiction, it raises a powerful question: what if drugs or alcohol become a way of escaping something deeper, such as emotional pain, shame, loneliness or emptiness? Jung explored this connection through his work with an alcoholic patient, whose story eventually influenced Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. He suggested that the craving for alcohol could sometimes represent a deeper thirst for meaning, wholeness and spiritual connection. Although Jung did not establish a universal theory of addiction, his work encourages us to look beyond the substance and understand the person behind it. Recovery can mean more than simply stopping the behaviour; it can involve confronting the pain we have been running from, rebuilding connections and discovering purpose. Perhaps the real turning point comes when we stop trying to escape ourselves and begin to understand ourselves. #addictionawareness #addiction #carljung #shadowwork

Addiction lives in the realm of the unconscious. The individual themselves is the origin of the addiction. Hence the fundamental surrender required in step 1. The ego is fighting for control in a dynamic where the power is greater than the ego alone. Hence we look to a power greater than ourselves to restore us to sanity from the insanity of the addiction. The addiction that is senseless as from a sane perspective it makes no sense to continue it.
