@explainingourpast: Camptown Cemetery | Brenham, Texas Some of the most meaningful chapters of Texas history are preserved in places that have too often been overlooked. Dating back to at least the 1860s, Camptown Cemetery is recognized as Brenham’s oldest predominantly African American cemetery. It is the final resting place of generations of individuals whose lives, experiences, and contributions are part of the history of Brenham and Washington County. For many years, portions of this historic cemetery were obscured by overgrowth, and numerous graves remain unmarked. Yet the significance of those buried here has never diminished. This brief footage is only a small introduction. I am currently researching the cemetery’s history and preparing a more comprehensive video to share in the coming months. My hope is to help preserve these stories, honor those laid to rest here, and bring greater awareness to a place deserving of remembrance and respect. Their lives mattered. Their stories deserve to be told. #CamptownCemetery #brenhamtexas #WashingtonCountyTexas #africanamericanhistory #texashistory
