🏹 Before El Monte had a name, a city government, or a founding date, this land was home to Indigenous people whose descendants are still fighting to preserve their history. In 1771, Spanish missionaries established Mission San Gabriel Arcángel near what is now Montebello, before relocating it to its present location in 1775. The mission system brought forced labor, religious coercion, disease, punishment, and devastating disruption to Indigenous communities throughout the San Gabriel Valley. The Kizh Nation identifies itself as the original people of this region, with ancestral ties reaching back thousands of years. I'm also aware of the longstanding controversy surrounding the names Kizh, Gabrieleño, and Tongva. Kizh representatives dispute the historical legitimacy of the term Tongva, while other Indigenous descendants and researchers recognize and use it. This disagreement deserves acknowledgment, not erasure. When El Monte developed into an American settlement in the 1850s, Indigenous communities had already endured generations of colonization and displacement. The city wasn't built on empty land. And the people who lived here first never disappeared. How much of El Monte's Indigenous history were you taught? #CaliforniaBuriedHistory #ElMonteHistory #KizhNation #MissionSanGabriel #IndigenousCalifornia
