Responding to the prosecution’s explanation that the withdrawal would serve the best interest of all by saving time and government resources, Cayetano pointed out that the Senate has no constitutional deadline requiring the trial to end by November. He said the Senate can balance the proceedings with other urgent responsibilities, particularly deliberations on the 2027 national budget, while ensuring that the pursuit of efficiency does not come at the expense of fairness. Cayetano also drew a distinction between withdrawing an article before evidence is presented and withdrawing it after witnesses and documents have already been presented before the impeachment court. He cautioned that the latter raises serious questions about the defense’s opportunity to answer the accusations and the impact on the Vice President’s reputation.
