@artistmanagementondemand: The music industry is about to change in ways we haven't seen in decades, and today was just the beginning. As I predicted, Universal Music Group announced a huge round of layoffs and restructuring that signals the beginning of a major shift in the music industry and in my mind when all is said and done what you know the record industry to be today will be almost unrecognizable in a few years. Will share those thoughts and my vision soon but until then this is really big news, more is going to come soon, and im excited to talk with you all about it! #musicindustry #universalmusicgroup #umg

as someone who worked at a label until very recently (which may or may not have been under the label group mentioned), this is 100000% the correct take. Very little artist development, and also if one single works and the next single/album isn't immediately successful, artist development slows even more, and the interest within the label to continue developing an artist drops significantly. Very focused on the immediate success, and a huge lack of focus on longevity and catalog creation.

I think this is one reason that the Kpop model is taking over the game, those companies are doing that “old school” style of development. Starting from zero and maintaining rights. Not saying that is better or worse for the artists, but definitely a thriving sector of the industry

This is the industry's fault. They wanted to save money and search for almost developed talent online vs having A&R and the other mechanisms that grew talent organically.

It does just feel like we are constantly barraged with viral hits that die off after a few weeks — we haven’t had a true song of the summer in YEARS (maybe Espresso?) and the pace at which consumers demand content isn’t enough for record labels to truly nurture growth.

Your point aligns with what I’ve believed for a few years now. Artists aren’t growing how they used to. I’ve seen artists grow and level out to about 60 but haven’t gotten to 100 how older artists have

The Joe Budden podcast have been talking about this for a while. The artist development has vanished! I remember during interviews, artists would mentioned they were signed when they were 12 and we didn’t see them until they were 16/17. Now they don’t know how to perform live. I think that’s why nostalgia is big. The lack of quality has driven us back to yesteryears when artists were treated like talent.

Been on the publishing side as a&r, and writer/producer and I want to say any kind of industry support for deep a&r/artist development types has been dead since Covid. Been such a bummer to see doors swing side open for influencer artists/big personalities and close tight for future potential superstars who are incredible songwriters because they can’t grab your attention in 5 seconds.

the reverse of the Live Nation umbrella is striking on the ground level. "local bands" are beginning to boycott venues as the squeeze has come down. The whole physical infrastructure is collapsing.

They need to stop hiring A&R from Eton and Cambridge and start actually being culturally relevant….. majority who work in major have never worked in the industry!!
