Newborns can’t talk yet, but they’re communicating all the time, through tiny cues most of us miss at first. Once you learn their “little language,” so much of the guesswork (and the stress) falls away. Here’s what your baby is trying to tell you: 1) Feeding cues, turning toward you with an open mouth means hungry; pushing the bottle or breast away means full (don’t force the rest) 2) Sleep cues, those jerky arm movements are the normal Moro reflex, and stirring with eyes closed is light sleep, so wait a moment before picking them up 3) Tired signs, rubbing eyes, looking away, or getting jerky and unsettled all mean “help me wind down” 4) Little clues, a fist in the mouth can mean hunger, going red and grunting is usually just working on a poop, and pulling their legs up can mean gas 5) When they cry a lot, a stiffening body can mean overstimulation, and fussy evenings are the normal “witching hour” that eases with time Two things worth remembering: your baby isn’t “being difficult”, they’re a little person who can’t talk yet, so reading their cues is how you understand them. And if you’ve checked everything and they’re still crying, sometimes, but very rarely, there’s just no clear reason (hello, colic), and that’s okay too. It doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. This is general guidance, not medical advice. Crying that comes with a fever, poor feeding, vomiting, a weak or high-pitched cry, or a baby who seems unwell isn’t just a cue, so trust your gut and call your pediatrician. Sources: infant cue and crying guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the NHS. 📌 Save this for the hard days as a good reminder 👶 Share it with another new parent Anything we forgot? We built a handy baby log called Noora baby. It lets you easily track feeds, diapers, sleep and more and helps you keep all your baby info in one place, identify patterns, and share it with your partner. We would love for you to give it a try (more info in our bio)
