I've been following Dan for quite a while and just recently found your page. I had to leave my church because I could go without feeling a deep sense of shame. I was slowly noticing the way certain people were being treated by the people in my church and felt I wasn't doing enough to stop it. I loved my friends and family that weren't Christians and couldn't understand why other Christians seemed to have such a problem with it. Pages like yours, Dan's and Dr.Fry's have really helped me. I know this was a long comment but I just wanted to thank you for the information you provide and the perspective you have on the Bible. It's helped me so much

The one point of contention I have with this response and Dan’s own response is that you both take a very merciful stance. This is not just bad theology; it’s a calculated, purposeful grift. People like this guy don’t care about salvation. They knowingly spout destructive rhetoric because it’s in their own interest.

The selling of his stuff isn't what was going to give him salvation, so it is not a work that he needed to do In order to earn salvation. it was merely a gesture to say that he lays it all down at the feet of christ.

Do you take other ancient literature on the same terms you state about the Bible? Eg ‘flawed humans trying to understand god.’ Isn’t the Iliad, Bhagavad Gita and other ancient texts exactly the same as the Bible in these respects? If not, why not?
