Kajo-Keji County (also spelled Kajo Kaji, Kajokeji, or Kago Kaju) is a key administrative county in South Sudan’s Central Equatoria State. Located approximately 150 kilometers south of the capital city, Juba, it sits directly along the international border with Northern Uganda (bordering the Moyo and Yumbe districts). Key Information Overview Demographics & Language: Predominantly inhabited by the Kuku people, a Bari-speaking ethnic group belonging to the Karo/Nilotic family. The main spoken language is Kuku. Trade Routes: Due to its proximity to Uganda, markets in Kajo-Keji traditionally maintain strong economic links with Ugandan border towns like Moyo and Yumbe. Community & Cultural Identity The Kuku community of Kajo-Keji is recognized for a deep emphasis on education, community-based development, and agriculture. Prior to recent conflicts, the county was an educational and religious hub in Equatoria, boasting numerous secondary schools, vocational training institutions (such as St. Martin Workshop), and active church administrative seats including the Episcopal Diocese of Kajo-Keji and Sacred Heart Catholic Parish. Recent Historical Context Civil Struggles & Displacement: Kajo-Keji has endured repeated waves of conflict, notably during the second Sudanese Civil War (1983–2005) and the post-2016 South Sudanese internal conflicts. Violence in 2016–2017 caused large-scale displacement, forcing much of the population across the border into refugee settlements in Uganda (such as Palorinya). Resilience & Resettlement: Since 2020–2021, thousands of residents and returnees have been actively rebuilding the county. Re-establishing agricultural production, reopening local schools, rebuilding infrastructure, and fostering community sports and unity programs remain central to ongoing local peace-building and recovery efforts.
