@kodekloud: Why Git Wasn’t Enough for Anthropic!! Anthropic’s AI agents merge over 30,000 code updates every single day, triggering a staggering 25 million automated testing jobs. Under standard Git, every single test machine had to clone gigabytes of repository history just to verify a one-file bug fix, generating an unsustainable 600 petabytes of network traffic daily. Because Git was designed decades ago for offline human developers who download an entire codebase to their local laptops, it completely buckled under the rapid-fire demands of automated AI development. To eliminate this bottleneck, Anthropic built Scion, a custom version control system where full code history stays on central servers while test runners fetch only the exact folder they need. Using content-based file IDs paired with smart multi-tier caching, Scion answers over 99% of file requests instantly, slashing checkout times from minutes to seconds and saving 25% of testing CPU power. Incredibly, a tiny team of just seven engineers built the entire replacement system using Claude in only five months. #SystemDesign #Anthropic #DevOps #SoftwareEngineering #AIEngineering #TechNews

So basically they reinvented git because they did not know how to use git since it already provided everything anthropic needed. Got it 🥰🥰🥰

I think they just wanted to vibe code some stuff to give it a fancy metaphor name

Nonsense. It is 99.99% git with a patch. Like hello?!

Long story short: they had no idea how to properly use git

No it’s because Microsoft owns GitHub and would steal their code immediately without remorse. This is why they bought GitHub in the first place. It would be foolish to store their code on their competitors website.

why your codebase is 100gb in anyway?

why not just keep a permanent copy of the repo on each CI machine and then just do a git pull for whatever branch they need? thats how git was designed to work, seems like they just worked around their shitty ci pipeline

instead of optimising this let’s recreate the wheel and add a bigger server

So why do big companies like Anthropic/Google still have a Monorepo? seems counter-intuitive for exactly the main problem they're solving with Scion. Though i agree git's vision is becoming outdated with the insane speed things are moving nowadays

Can someone answer this: where do companies like Anthropic or OpenAI store and share their codebase? They cannot share it on GitHub; do they build their own hub?

So it not a new version control

So it's enabling a selective "git pull" based only on the changesets needed? Nifty, but does it need to be a whole new vc system or could it just be a server for centralized git ops and some custom apis to distribute the code necessary to CI?

So Claude Code couldn’t figure out Git and it vibe-coded its own version control system.
We’ve all been there.

Why not installing Git client on every CI server and pull only changes from Git server - just like all developers do for years?

sounds like a very over engineered solution. if the same codebase needs to be on every machine. why not use a nfs share to make the same code base available to every machine? or am I missing something

Full circle. Git was literally designed to be decentralized after the toils of CVS and whatever that one Linus used.
