@godofisraelisevil666: A fish-shaped carving in the Sonoran Desert, older than Stonehenge, was damaged during border wall construction. This Las Playas Intaglio, located in the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, on ancestral lands of the Tohono O’odham, Hia-Ced O’odham, and other Tribes, was made by removing desert stones to reveal lighter earth, stretching about 272 feet. On April 23, 2026, U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated a contractor “inadvertently disturbed” the site while working on a new border wall. The Center for Biological Diversity documented a 50-foot-wide scraped corridor, with satellite reports estimating damage to about a third of the carving. Other accounts describe a 60-to-70-foot corridor crossing its southern half. Research published in The SAA Archaeological Record by David S. Whitley and Ronald I. Dorn dates Las Playas to a minimum of 6,500 to 7,300 years, making it the oldest scientifically dated geoglyph in the Americas. Tohono O’odham leaders, who had previously identified the site as one to avoid, called it “a devastating and entirely avoidable loss.” DHS waivers allowed construction without the usual historic-preservation review. CBP says the remaining portion of the site is now secured and protected. How can public agencies better document and protect Indigenous cultural sites during major infrastructure projects? #IndigenousHistory #TohonoOodham #SonoranDesert #CulturalHeritage
