This morning, spectators collected at the shoreline of the San Diego Bay (some of whom had traveled from LA and Mexico) to welcome in the tall, tall (so tall) Mexican Navy ship called Cuauhtémoc. The three-masted barque with towering traditional rigging has docked right by the Star of India. The ship’s in town on a goodwill tour—it just had a similar trip in the Bay Area just days ago—and serves as a way to train the greener officers in the Mexican Navy. Since 1982, generations of officers have used Cuauhtémoc hone their skills and tour from port to port around the world. Those international voyages have also made #Cuauhtémoc an ambassador for Mexico and its maritime traditions; it’s known as the “Ambassador and Gentleman of the Seas.” But this ship’s sailing resume isn’t without some bruises: In May 2025, the Cuauhtémoc crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge (its masts hit the underside). It was fully repaired by that September. Today’s crowd held Bienvenidos signs and waved Mexican flags as the ship soared in. And tomorrow, they can climb aboard.
