Named all of the step stools and push carts in the office. Would hear “who has Trolley Parton?” And “Where’s Carty-B?” And “Is Gwen-Step-On-Mi in anyone’s office?”

All my glue sticks are named Gary, he’s a world renowned tap dancer and can’t lose his hat. He needs it for his show!

When I taught fifth grade, we had a pencil nursing home. Each pencil was named an elderly name like Bert or Patricia. The students all rallied when one would go missing. When they were too small to use, we had a “graveyard” of headstones.

Mr. Elmer also needs his hat. His head will get cold without it!!

I had favorite purple Flair pen that my students named “The Special.” I’m admittedly scatterbrained, and I would set it down in odd places. The way the class monitored the location of The Special! It was never lost for long. 🤣 Giving it a name would have been genius!

I do the same thing!!! But his name is Elmer! And we don’t lose Elmer’s hat or make Elmer too tall because if we do we will have to throw him in the trash and we don’t want to throw Elmer in the trash! It has helped SO MUCH!

For years I did this with my dry erase markers. Students were not allowed to use them unless it was for a problem we were working. They were simply Bluey 27, Reddy 19, Blacky 56 (went through many more black markers), Greeny 14, etc. They’d get a little funeral before being thrown away. “You were my favorite Bluey ever!” Then I’d grab the next one, “Bluey 28, you’re the best Bluey ever!” Kids needed to think I was crazy to respect my rules. Middle school in case it wasn’t obvious!

We do this with insects. My daughter was terrified of stink bugs when she was little. But then we named a stink bug Jimmy and told her he was our pet. She says “hi Jimmy” to every stink bug now and never gets scared 😆
