Brayan Rodriguez, son of one of the owners, says ICE followed the van in. Pacheco called it an ambush and said the agents had no paperwork or warrants. She kept recording. The agents wore masks and vests marked ICE. She told them to leave Kerman. One walked toward her, telling her she was "getting really close." A woman at the scene says ICE wouldn't let her get the names of the men being taken. The video has been reposted thousands of times. One of the four men was later released because he has legal status. Pacheco says he was shaken. Bakery owner Mayra Galvez says the men are regulars, "hard workers who work in the fields." "Four men were detained while getting pan dulce and coffee on their way to work," Pacheco said. "How does that make Kerman safer? Fear is not public safety." They were among eight Kerman residents taken in under 48 hours, part of a Central Valley surge that swept up more than 100 farmworkers and others in a matter of days. Local officials say agents don't appear to have warrants or to be targeting people with criminal records. ICE hasn't answered questions about its tactics. The bakery usually sells out of tamales by late morning. On Monday there were plenty left. "The streets are really empty," Rodriguez said. "Even people with residency are scared." With the owners' help, Pacheco has identified two of the men. She is still searching for the third. "I was standing there as a mother, as a daughter of farmworkers," she said. #centralvalley #farm #🇺🇸🇲🇽
