Caregiving should never become a competition over who has the most authority. It should be a commitment to the dignity, safety, and well-being of the person receiving care.
Caregiving should never become a competition over who has the most authority. It should be a commitment to the dignity, safety, and well-being of the person receiving care. "You don't have to be your parent's caregiver. But let's talk about what happens when you want to control the person who is." "Some families disagree about everything except who's going to do the actual caregiving." After 17 years in assisted living, I've witnessed something that deserves an honest conversation. Let me start by saying something clearly. Adult children are not automatically obligated to become their parents' caregivers. Some have careers. Some have families of their own. Some have health challenges. Some simply are not equipped to provide the level of care their parents need. And that is okay. But here's where the conversation becomes uncomfortable. Sometimes, the person who is not providing the daily care wants to control every detail of how that care is delivered. They question the meals. They question the schedules. They question the activities. They question decisions made by the people who are physically present, providing the care every day. Now, don't misunderstand me. Families have every right to ask questions, advocate for their loved ones, and raise concerns. And caregivers and facilities must be accountable. but Distance from the care doesn't come with a front-row seat to every decision. I've watched it for 17 years. The family who visits once a year arrives with the loudest opinions. Meanwhile, the people who bathe her, feed her, and sit with her at 2 a.m. get overruled. Love is not measured by how many orders you give from a distance. Sometimes guilt dresses itself up as control. Sometimes "I just want the best for her" really means "I need to feel like I still have a say." And sometimes the kindest thing a family can do is listen to the people who are there every single day. And there's another person we must never forget in this conversation. The parent. What does Mom want? What does Dad want? Are we listening to their preferences and respecting their ability to make decisions? Or are we so busy disagreeing with one another that the person receiving the care has lost their voice? And sometimes, that requires everyone to put their pride aside. Not every family behaves this way. But when it happens, we need to talk about it. Because silence doesn't solve the problem. If you can't carry the care, at least don't make it heavier for the ones who do.Caregivers, families, and assisted living professionals, I want to hear from you. Have you ever witnessed a situation where someone wanted to control the care but wasn't willing or able to participate in providing it? Where does family advocacy end and unnecessary interference begin? Let's have a respectful conversation.💜 #HealingForCaregivers #FollowMeAcrossTheBridge #CaregiverTruth #FamilyDynamics #AgingParents
