I can blame colonialism 99% to the British, Germany, Spanish, Portuguese, French and UN ( for countries like Rwanda that were kept on watch than being granted independence). And, I blame slavery to Arabs for about 30%. Why, the Arabs were middlemen traders. The buyers were whites mostly Americans and Europeans. The sellers were Africans themselves mostly African chiefs selling criminals and low profile clan members ( peasants). Before Arabs, slavery was here among African chiefs, chiefdom to chiefdom mostly from war lootings.. The Persians came in but collected them from the coast, not until the Triangular trade happened with America, Europe and African tribes. The demand for slaves was high and Arabs joined the business. To date, less Africans (blacks) are found in Arab and Persian countries, a few were taken to Arabia and they had to be castrated.

If slavery was done by British, Germany, Spanish or French directly, Islam would've been learnt by force and African chiefs would've been forced to choose between being Moslems to remain in power or lose all like the Ottoman Empire in Northern Africa 100s of years back before European invasion to Africa
